Curious if anyone here collects baseball cards - and if so which ones? Thinking of getting back into it again . I know the are pricey these days even at Walmart . H

I don't anymore. We used to have a guy in the league that hosts a show about baseball cards where he would open a couple packs a night and talk a little about the card/player on Twitter, but I'm not sure if he does that anymore.

I collect purely for the purpose of getting them signed either in person or through the mail. As you said, the hobby has gotten kind of crazy and expensive. Everyone views it as an investment, like playing the stock market. You really have to work it to find things, when you used to just be able to walk into a store and you were good to go. I always ask for gift cards to Target or Walmart for Christmas, so that helps!

I'm into cards off and on. Mostly like the thrill of joining reasonably price breaks, collecting cool Acuña cards, and ripping packs. I don't buy a ton of high end singles.
Next summer I plan on putting everything I have into a spreadsheet and liquidating some stuff that is cool but I don't really need to have. I just snagged a couple Stadium Club hobby boxes for me and my oldest to rip for his birthday.

When I was a kid we collected to try to get all the cards in the set .We traded with kids in the neighborhood all of the time . If you had “doubles “ you traded to get ones that you needed . I remember using the cards to play some sort of game with my brother where we used the card to hit a paper ball and make the cards run the bases before the other guy threw the ball in . Probably wrecked tons of great cards in the 70’s! Last year I picked up quite a few of the Topps heritage because they looked like my cards from 1972. Memories . Nowadays I get the sense that folks are looking to them as more of an investment. Or a lottery ticket- Hoping to get that rare card to sell for $$$$$$. eBay seems to have tons of rookie cards available.it almost seems more cost effective to just buy the card on eBay that you really want vs spending $$$$ on packs or boxes . But I guess that’s the thrill of opening the packs !

It's very much more cost effective to just buy singles. The print run numbers are skyrocketing again now, with Topps making a major cash grab. Hobby boxes are prohibitively expensive for a lot of the products. Though Stadium Club was only $100 with 2 guaranteed autos per hobby. There are definitely a handful people making a ton of money on it, and rich people using cards as a tax haven drives the prices up too.
