I know there is a bidding schedule for players who just became free agents, but what about players who have been available for a while? Say there is player that was dropped last year and never picked up. Do I have to bid on that player or can I simply add him when free agency begins?

We will probably be able to add players after free agency, but in a controlled way. I don't want one team getting 4 players just because they got to ESPN first.

Another question for this thread. There is a player I was interested in, and after doing a search, I found the last activity for him was being claimed by another team mid season. When I went to that teams roster (ESPN and proboards), he wasn't on there. What's the ruling on this? To me, if a player is claimed but no move is made within 48 hour, that player should be fair game.

I agree. Either he wasn't picked up or he was cut. In either case, he should be available to all since he has exceeded rookie limit and he is on the waiver wire.

Cool, I'll add him to my list of players not on a roster I want. Excited to see the bidding system for those players

This seems like a good time to bring it up. Rather than have bidding for these players, I was thinking after FA bidding is over, we could run it like a draft. That way you just use 2016 salary. We would conduct the draft on here with draft order being reverse order of 2016 standings. That way everyone gets a crack at players without breaking the bank. Thoughts? Would be great to hear from ALL members here. Thanks. I did this in a previous league and it worked pretty well.

And any team can pass on drafting a player, and once they pass they are out of the draft. Another question that will become relevant down the road, so it seems. How do we handle international free agents? Or is that buried in the rules somewhere.

I'm not so sure I would like that setup. In years where the FA market is arguable very weak (like this year), the top 5, maybe 8 picks may be relevant. I believe having the FA bidding is still the most fair. With a draft, the teams at the end of the draft order have zero chance of filling a gap they have in their lineup with a suitable player, and not just a player who falls to them in the draft. After the first round, the draft would just be picking your poison with upside/risky players, which is essentially the same thing we do in the FA bidding, only with dollar amounts and not draft numbers.
With how much certain players will command via FA in real life, people would still be breaking the bank to sign them. The amount of available cap space each team has would become less significant, because competition for FA would be removed (unless we could trade draft picks).
So, in conclusion, my opinion is that we keep it the way it is, as the FA bidding really puts an element of strategy and realness into the league. Having a draft will put a blanket around the top FA of the FA pool, they will only be available to people who have top picks. If money is our concern, then maybe we should make moving cap space in trades legal.
This is just my opinion, I will still plan around either process. I'm guessing I will be outnumbered on this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the draft we are talking about is only for ESPN free agents who were not on a team last year. Players that aren't entering FA in real life, but have been cut at some point last season or never rostered at all.

Metsfreak, maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying, but Brian is talking about having a draft for players that were available on the ESPN site at the end of the year. We are still going to be bidding on MLB free agents. Brian has put up a list of real life free agents by position that we will be bidding on under free agency.

That's my understanding as well. Keep the bidding process for recent FAs, and hold a draft for waiver wire players from previous season. I think clarification may be needed due to previous comments.

Yes, the draft would be for only players on ESPN. It is not like we have a ton of all-stars there, and bidding would not be easy. You can't make the entire player universe available in a practical way.

I misunderstood. I thought the draft would encompass ALL of the FA's, did not realize there was already a list exclusively for the bidding. If that's the case, then yeah, I would not have a problem with it. I just don't see it having a huge impact, as a lot of teams will choose to fill out their rosters via the bidding process. But yeah, not a bad idea.

You can't make the entire player universe available in a practical way. While I'm for the draft, there is a way to have open bidding on all of the player universe. In the other league I'm in, we have a thread for bids. If you want to make a bid on a player, you post their name, position, and team as the folder title, with the bid price as a message (reply). Everyone else can see that bid, and then has a chance to bid as well. The player is awarded to the highest bidding team when there has been no activity on that player for 24 hours. We have a bid point system to discourage .1 mil bidding increments and drawn out bidding wars, but we could easily require .5 mil increments. All in all, there probably won't even be that many players added that aren't MLB free agents, but there are a couple I have an eye on and think there should be some way for teams to get these players in the off-season.
